Marijuana: What it can do to men?

December 14th, 2011

Do you remember that episode of “Seinfeld” in which Kramer and George’s father invented a bra for men?  I think they were calling it the “mansier”.  I just learned the craziest thing about marijuana use that might make this fictional invention become a necessity.  Did you know that a man who uses marijuana can actually grow breasts?  It is a condition known as gynecomastia.  The Medline Plus Medical Encyclopedia defines gynecomastia as “the growth of abnormally large breasts in males.  It is due to the excess growth of breast tissue, not excess fat tissue.”  Medline lists several causes for this problem including marijuana use.

I actually found an explanation for it on a website called manboobsguide.com.  Anthony writes, “If you are a user of marijuana and you have gynecomastia, your drug use may be the cause.  Medical studies show that the effects of cannabis are that the levels of testosterone in the body decreases.  Marijuana contains phytoestrogens that essentially limits the production of testosterone inside the body.  Since the levels of testosterone are lower, an imbalance in the testosterone to estrogen ratio develops which leads to gynecomastia.”  Anthony suggests ceasing or cutting back the usage of marijuana to correct the problem.

A person referring to himself as “Cloak” on marijuana.com, a pro-marijuana site, even wrote in personal horror story about how marijuana usage has escalated his gynecomastia which he had started having before he became an avid smoker.  With daily usage, he now is getting surgery to handle it at just seventeen years of age.  He mentions the doctor warning him to cease usage of the marijuana so as to prevent the problem from growing back.

So guys out there, unless you want to wear the “mansier”, perhaps you ought to leave the marijuana alone!  All kidding aside this drug marijuana can harm you in many ways.  If you or someone you love needs help from a drug treatment facility.  We can help.  Contact our marijuana addiction help line and get rehab services now.  1-877-340-3602.

Teenage Marijuana Abuse

December 6th, 2011

Did you know that about 60% of the teenagers who use drugs will use only marijuana?  That’s right it is the most widely used drug among teenager.  One of the reason they use it more is that it is much stronger than the marijuana that was available in the 60’s.  One thing we may not have known is that marijuana is physically addictive and when they get off they have some withdrawal symptoms just like a cigarette addict.

The University of Michigan’s Monitoring the Future study showed substantial increase among 8th, 10th and 12th graders from 1992 to 1997.  That is a disturbing national trend.  Between 1991 to 2001 the percentage of 8th graders who used marijuana doubled.  Kids are using marijuana at an early age and the earlier they start using the more likely  to become dependent on this or other drugs later in life.

Why do they use marijuana in the first place?  They see their older siblings or friends are using it in front of them.  Sometimes peer pressure plays a major role.  They think smiling marijuana is cool so they want to be cool.  Teens start getting into problems when they smoke marijuana to escape from problems at school, home life, or with friends.

What do you look for in your teen?  They will exhibit dizziness and have trouble walking.  They may have red bloodshot eyes.  They may have trouble remembering things that just happened.  Your teen may appear silly and giggly for no apparent reason.

What do they feel when they smoke marijuana?  They will feel relaxed and somewhat giddy.  They will be made to feel very hungry and thirsty.  Some may get bad effects like becoming paranoid and have feelings of anxiety or dizziness.  THC is the active ingredient in marijuana and it can make you look like you just consumed alcohol.  The teen may get several emotional responses like relaxation, introspection, feeling “in tune” with the world, and irrationality.

All of this can affect school, sports, and other activities.  Marijuana affects their memory, judgment and perception.  They start to lose interest in their appearance and how they are doing in school and at home.  There is an association between an increase in sing marijuana and a decrease in the likelihood of graduating from high school.  Students who use marijuana are twice as likely to cut class.

Doesn’t matter what all this information adds up to one of the most important things we have to know is that marijuana is an illegal substance and it affects these teens in a harmful way.  What are you doing with your teen to get them educated?  Talk with them when they are as young as 11 and let them know how harmful these drugs are and they need to know some of the things that happen to teens who do use these drugs.  If you or someone you love needs help from a drug treatment facility, we can help.

Marijuana More Revealing Information

December 5th, 2011

What makes a young person be compelled to use marijuana so I kept investigating.  I wanted to have as much data as I could find that would be compelling to a young person, even one who is happy with a non-intellectual job and rides the city bus.  What area of life is most important to the majority of people?  Sexuality!  That in itself is an important subject to take up when it comes to young adults.  I know most of them when they are taking this drug Marijuana they are not attributing any of their problems to it.  And so I found an Australian study of 8,656 people reported by Ewen Callaway at newscientist.com.  This person wrote that marijuana users “may be trading sexual highs for the chemical kind.  Males who smoke marijuana daily are four times more likely to have trouble reaching orgasm than men who don’t inhale.”  The website continued with more data from another study also from Australia that targeted women.  The team from La Trobe University in Melbourne found a strong trend for increased sexual activity among female smokers, who were also seven times more likely to have been diagnosed with a sexually transmitted infection in the last year than non-smokers.  Considering that many sexually transmitted diseases remain without a cure and can lead to such problems as social stigma and infertility, this was quite a disturbing piece of information.

Marijuana: An Eye Opener

November 29th, 2011

All too often, I run into young people who extol the virtues of marijuana use and seem to have no clue about the harmful effects.  Since my last formal drug education occurred in the 1980s in high school, I figured it was time to better inform myself of new research into the effects of cannabis usage and what this really means to the partaker.  I found some surprising information that I am excited to share with others.

According to the National Institute on Drug Abuse website, researchers have determined that the active compound in marijuana, THC, rapidly moves from the lungs into the bloodstream and from there it accesses the brain.  It attaches to cannabinoid receptors and causes the much sought-after high.  Interestingly, the areas of the brain that have to do with the common effects that users report are the areas with more receptor sites.  NIDA lists the areas of the brain as those involved with “pleasure, memory, thinking, concentrating, sensory and time perception, and coordinated movement.”  The NIDA website also states that “marijuana intoxication can cause distorted perceptions, impaired coordination, difficulty with thinking and problem solving, and problems with learning and memory. Research has shown that, in chronic users, marijuana’s adverse impact on learning and memory can last for days or weeks after the acute effects of the drug wear off. As a result, someone who smokes marijuana every day may be functioning at a suboptimal intellectual level all of the time.”

Since many people might be uninterested in school and happily at a job they feel is unaffected by their marijuana usage, I looked for more studies to show exactly how this can play out in the practical world.  The website sciencedaily.com had a summary article encapsulating the results of more marijuana studies.  Their site posts this following data:  “To examine the link between marijuana use by drivers and risk of a car accident, researchers at Columbia University did a meta-analysis of nine epidemiologic studies and found that drivers who test positive for marijuana or report driving within three hours of marijuana use are more than twice as likely as other drivers to be involved in motor vehicle crashes. The researchers also found evidence that crash risk increases with the concentration of marijuana-produced compounds in the urine and the frequency of self-reported marijuana use.  According to the investigators 8 of 9 studies found that drivers who use marijuana are significantly more likely to be involved in crashes than drivers who do not.”

Marijuana News

October 20th, 2011

Today I got up and started my day looking over all the “up to date” news on drugs and its abuse.  It started off with a great story about how the government is cracking down on medical marijuana.  Oh yes, they had better do that because it is becoming a large profit center for the business man.  Commercial interests are absolutely taking advantage of the addicts’ behavior.  Then I found a story about the government giving a doctor a hugh grant to develop a vaccination against drug abuse.  Wow!  That one blew my mind because what the doctor reported actually made sense however he did not take into account the behavior of the addict.  Little does he know there is already someone out there trying to figure out how to get around this vaccination.  These addicts want their high.  Then I went to the third story where it is being promoted to legalize pot.  So a novelty store is putting out candy that looks like marijuana and on the bag there is picture of pot smoker who is very cool.  This is a message to our young children to smoke is to be cool.  All of this going on while there is a drug war out there.  People in Mexico are getting killed every day because of the distribution and sales of drugs.  This reporter is getting the idea that this country has got drugs and its abuse on its mind.  Many hours and dollars are spent on how to grow drugs, how to distribute drugs and how to make money on these people who have to have it.  Education in the first place is what should be done; but when do we educate.  We start them when they are young and we keep a good message out there from now on.  Because believe me the distributors and dealers are keeping their message out every day.  We need to get out the facts about marijuana with the same level of persistence and intensity.

Alcohol vs. Marijuana

September 18th, 2011

Ever been to a party and some are doing alcohol and some are doing marijuana?  Well is smoking a joint the same as drinking alcohol?  Let me give you some facts.  Then you can decide.

Alcohol consists of one substance only:  ethanol.  Marijuana has more than 400 known chemicals, including the same cancer-causing substance found in tobacco smoke.  Unlike cigarette smokers, pot smokers tend to inhale deeply and hold the smoke as long as possible to increase the effect of the drug.  That action does worse damage to the lungs.

When you drink alcohol it is eliminated from the body in a few hours, but TCH which comes from marijuana stays into the body for weeks, possibly months, depending on the length and intensity of the usage.

THC damages the immune system.  Alcohol does not.

Well wait a minute here, I am not trying to minimize the damages of alcohol abuse.  I am not trying to say drink alcohol don’t do pot.  What I am trying to say alcohol abuse can be equally harmful.  Users of marijuana need to be aware that the chemicals in them are cancer-causing and remain in the body long after the drug is taken.

Marijuana: How is it Used?

September 11th, 2011

Of course we all know that marijuana is illegal and it is the most commonly used drug in the world.  Survey conducted in 2007 found that 14.4 million individuals in the US alone had smoked marijuana at least once during the previous month.

Well how do they use it?  It is usually smoked as a cigarette called a joint but may also be smoked in a pipe.  Sometimes but not so often it is mixed with food an eaten or brewed as tea.  Sometimes a cigar smoker will take his cigar and remove the tobacco are replace it with pot.  They call that a “blunt”.

These blunts are sometime laced with other more powerful drugs, such as crack cocaine or PCP.  This PCP is another powerful hallucinogen.

When a person smokes a joint, he usually feels it s effect within minutes.  The immediate sensations are like this:  heart rate increase, lessened coordination and balance, and a “dreamy” unreal state of mind and all this peaks within the first 30 minutes.  These effects are really short term and will wear off in two or three hours, but they could last longer depending on how much the user takes.  The potency of THC and the presences of other drugs added into the mix also determine how long the felling will last.

It has been found that consuming one joint gives as much exposure to cancer-producing chemicals as smoking five cigarettes.  The mental consequences of marijuana use are equally severe.  Marijuana smokers have poorer memories and mental aptitude than do non-users.

What is marijuana?

September 4th, 2011

We have all heard of marijuana and probably not even asked.  What is marijuana?  It is the word used to describe the dried flowers, seeds and leaves of the Indian hemp plant.  When you are on the street you hear it called by many names like astro turf, bhang, dagga, dope, ganja, hemp, home grown, J, mary Jane, pot, reefer, roach, Texas Tea and weed.  Wow if friends were to invite me to do any of these I would probably say yes.  Because I was not aware marijuana had so many names.  Education is very good, without it I may get into trouble,

Hashish is a related form of the drug.  Because it is made from the seeds of the Indian hemp plant.  This is also called chocolate, hash, or shit, it is an average six times stronger than marijuana.  That gives new meaning to the terms I hear, “that shit is some good shit”

Cannabis describes any of the different drugs that come from Indian hemp, Including marijuana and hashish.

It really doesn’t matter what you call it by name this drug is a hallucinogen—a substance which distorts how the mind perceives the world you live in.

This plant contains a chemical that creates this distortion and it is known as “THC” The amount of THC found in any given batch of marijuana may vary substantially.  However it has been observed that the overall percentage of THC has increased in recent years.

Ecstasy: A Gateway Drug to the Gateway Drug

August 28th, 2011

Studies are showing that marijuana, broadly considered the #1 gateway drug to harder substances, actually has its own gateway drug.

It street names include:

Cadillac                                                 Roll

Adam                                                    X

Beans                                                    snowball

California Sunrise                            XE

Essence                                                XTC

Scooby snacks                                   Love Pill

Lover’s speed                                    Hug drug

Have you heard your family or friends say these words and you didn’t know what they are?

Nowadays people in general are looking for some fun and some of them have an addiction and they may not even know it.  They have problems and maybe some physical pain and they have no solution to these so they resort to drugs and alcohol.  That’s where good education comes in.  I really believe that if they knew what they were putting in their systems they wouldn’t start doing it.  For some, after starting there is no turning back, they become obsessed with the drug and alcohol.

One of the drugs that have a reputation for partying is “Ecstasy” or any of the other names at the top of the page.

According to the 2007 National Survey on Drug Use and Health, an estimated 12.4 million Americans aged 12 or older tried Ecstasy at least once in their lives.  Hey folks that is 5% of the US population in that age group.  And they say there is no money to spend.  That same survey of 2007 indicated that 2.3% of 8th graders, 5.2% of 10th graders had tried Ecstasy.

92% of these kids who tried Ecstasy and kept using this drug then turned to other drug habits including marijuana addiction, amphetamines, cocaine and heroin.  Source: The Truth about Ecstasy

The young people in American are thinking they are doing these things for fun but if they had the correct education about what these drugs actually do to them perhaps they would not start.  If you have a child or a friend who need help with drug abuse contact us at 1-877-340-3602.  We’ll help you find a drug-free solution to addiction.

California police seize over $50 million worth of marijuana

July 26th, 2011

A California police team led by the Fresno County Sherriff’s Office conducted a raid in a remote growing territory that resulted in over $50 million worth of pot being seized.

Sheriff’s deputies flew in by helicopter in order to make the bust in Sierra National Forest. So far, two other growing sites have been discovered as well.

According to Fresno County authorities, the most remote locations in Fresno County are also some of the most popular for pot growers.

In this one bust, there were literally thousands of marijuana plants found growing. In the raid, police forces destroyed much of the crop that was growing. Police said that it was good that they had busted up the operation, because the pot was ready to hit the streets within a week.

No arrests were made during the raid, because the pot growers fled when they saw the helicopters coming in. According to Rick Ko, the director for vice operations for the Sheriff’s Office, Mexican drug traffickers typically operate the growing sites.

Marijuana continues to be the major gateway drug in the United States. More people abuse marijuana than any other illicit drugs. While there is a small movement to legalize marijuana, most recognize it for the dangerous substance it is. Not only is it a potent hallucinogen in its own right with long-term, damaging side effects. It also eventually leads to tolerance, after which point the drug abuser has to find harder drugs in order to get the same high. At this point, the only solution is drug abuse rehab.
